Raytheon Technology stocks up 1% after Raytheons drone strike announcement
Raytheonttechnology, the U.S. technology company behind drones that can scan for explosives, has announced a $1 billion deal to develop a drone that can be launched from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with the power of a rocket engine.
The announcement was made Thursday during a conference call with analysts and investors.
Raytheonics CEO Brian T. Jaffe said that the drone, called the Raytheron II, would be able to reach a maximum altitude of 400 meters (1,000 feet), and could operate autonomously from within a 20-minute window.
It would be capable of carrying out surveillance, target acquisition, reconnaissance, and search-and-rescue missions.
“It’s a big deal,” said Jaffe during the call.
“This is a breakthrough for us.”
The Raytherons drone is expected to be launched in 2019.
RayTheron II would be a first in UAV development.
Its primary competitor, the Predator, is based on the same engine that powers the Reaper drones.
Ray Theron’s drones have been used in military operations around the world.
Ray has already demonstrated drones capable of taking off from planes and taking off and landing on land in Australia, the Netherlands, and Germany.
The company’s drones can be armed with explosives.
“Our new drone will be able … to deliver a payload of about 300 pounds (135 kilograms) to a target and it will have a range of about 500 kilometers (310 miles),” Jaffe told analysts on the call, according to Bloomberg News.
The drone would be launched using a rocket propelled engine, according a press release from RayTheonics.
The rocket engine is designed to be used in the next generation of UAVs.
It uses a solid-state propulsion system that generates thrust by combining a high-pressure, liquid-liquid combination with a low-pressure piston.
The propulsion system is powered by an electric motor.
“The first-generation rocket engine could be scaled up to deliver the payload of the new drone,” Jaffe wrote in a conference report.
RayTron II has the same main engine as the Reaper, but it will be used to propel the drone’s payload.
The RayTherons drone will use an electric propulsion system designed to produce thrust from the propellant tank.
Raytron II will have four stages.
The first stage will carry the drone up to about 100 meters (330 feet) in altitude.
The second stage will deliver the drone to a maximum of 400 kilometers (1.6 miles) altitude.
After reaching the target, the drone will deploy the rocket engine to launch it again.
The third stage will provide the drone with a maximum range of roughly 500 kilometers.
“At that point, it will land and recover,” Jaffa said.
Rayetheons first-stage rocket engine will have two burners that will ignite the liquid propellant.
The propellant will flow through a nozzle on the bottom of the engine, which will be ignited by the second burners.
The nozzle will ignite at the bottom and ignite the nozzle on top of the nozzle, which is ignited by two burns on the nozzle.
The oxidizer gas from the second stage’s nozzle will then be ignited on the rocket stage and ignite both the propellants on the other end of the rocket.
“With the first burn, it’s really just a matter of getting the propellent into the nozzle,” said T. Michael Jones, a RayTheon research scientist who works on Raytheonian’s advanced technologies, in a statement.
“If we can do it, that will open up all sorts of exciting things.”
Jaffas comments were a bit more optimistic about the potential of RayTheons technology.
“We’re not talking about an aerospace industry product that will be launched into space or a weapon system that will blow up an enemy,” he said.
“What we’re talking about is a weapon that we could use on the battlefield, in the war, to help us in some of the most important combat missions that we can possibly take place in the future.”
The announcement comes less than two weeks after RayTheonian announced the development of the first drone capable of delivering explosives, which was the Reaper.
The Reaper drones are capable of using a high pressure, liquid liquid mixture, that uses high pressure to create a higher pressure.
The liquid liquid fuels the rocket engines, which are powered by electric motors.
The engine also has a piston that creates thrust when the piston moves in a certain direction.
In addition, the piston is designed so that the rocket will rotate when it is being propelled.
RayTHEON will be developing the RayTheonic’s next generation rocket engine, a solid state propulsion system.
“When we think about the power, the speed, the range, the payload, and the ability to do that at a time, that’s really a big improvement over the Reaper,” Jafra said during the conference call.
